Travel Tips
Arriving in Armenia can be a little overwhelming, here are the main things you need to know to get around!
-
You may be a little wary when you first arrive in Yerevan and see dogs roaming around the city but don’t be too worried. Most of the stray dogs in the city center are tagged (meaning they are neutered) and won’t give you any trouble!
When you head outside the city, you should be a little more wary but most of the time there isn’t a problem.

When it comes to taxis in Armenia, you might have heard horror stories in the past about tourists getting scammed, and those stories are 100% true. But, luckily Armenia now has two (uber-equivalent) apps to help you get around without being lied to about prices.
Yandex & GG are the two top taxi apps in Yerevan. Both will get you from point A to point B with little difference. GG has a slightly higher-quality car, but Yandex has an easier user interface. Whichever you choose, it will inform you of the approximate price of your taxi before you order.
When it comes to payment methods, this is one place where Armenia is still lagging. If you haven’t successfully connected your credit card to your Yandex or GG taxi apps, you’ll need to have cash on you for taxi rides, and it needs to be in small change! Most taxi drivers don’t carry change so better to always be prepared or they can get a little frustrated.
When it comes to day trips out of Yerevan, it’s tempting to hop in a van with pictures of famous tourist attractions on the side for convenience but this is another way you might end up overpaying! Try booking a taxi through the apps again to get a more concrete price.
If you do end up going with one of the vans, make sure you negotiate the price down to what is appropriate. You can check in the next section what most trips should cost!

If you’re thinking that Armenia must be dirt cheap as a ‘developing’ country, you probably need to reevaluate. While a lot in Armenia is significantly more affordable than in some parts of Europe, the US, and Australia you need to pay attention to what you’re paying! Over the last few years, Armenia has experienced significant inflation of prices, reflected mostly in Yerevan’s city center and accommodation prices.
While things seem affordable in the moment, you could easily spend $5 on a coffee and $50 on a meal without realising. Here are some estimates of what you should expect to pay in the city center:
A Cappuccino: $3.50
A Taxi ride in the city: $2-4
A Blow-Dry: $7-$13
A Shellac Manicure: $10-20
A mid-range meal: $20
